never heard of shag dance, except for the swing dance community, and are curious to know about it.

Carolina shag dancing is a form of swing dance that has a kinship with east coast swing, west coast
swing, and so-called jitterbug. Along with sharing blues, and R&B of the same tempo, the shag style
and step patterns have infiltrated west coast swing; thereby enabling dancers from both styles to
easily dance with each other.
The shag dance started to evolve in the 1930's in nightclubs along the Grand Strand, South Carolina,
most notably Myrtle Beach and the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach. The Carolina Shag is
the official state dance of South Carolina and North Carolina. The 'shag' has a following nationwide,
but has a cult status in the southeast, especially in the two Carolinas. Many cities in the southeast
have shag clubs.
Shag utilizes intricate footwork that intimates cool, smooth sexual inuendo between the partners.
Serious practitioners demonstrate sophisticated, true, waist-down movement. Using proper etiquette,
the shag dance is done in a 180 degree slot. This arrangement enables numerous couples to be on the
dance floor without bumping into each other. However, if a bump is occasioned, an 'excuse me' should
be commissioned as a courtesy. Those who blatantly abuse these etiquettes may receive some verbal
profanity, or in extreme cases, a facial re-arrangement!
SOS events are large shag dance parties held three times a year that can draw up to 15,000 people.
And, that's all of them dancing in 7 dance clubs in an area no bigger than two football fields! The three
SOS events are Fall Migration in mid September, Mid-Winter in January, and Spring Safari in April.
Mid-Winter is basically a four day event. However, Fall Migration and Spring Safari lasts for nine straight
days. DJ music and dancing run non-stop from 12 noon until 3 a.m. These crowds are blatant shag
afficionados!
Where is the Ocean Drive section? Look on the google map for N. Myrtle Beach, S.C. When you head
down Main St. and see the water tower with a shag dance couple painted on it, you're there!

Sooner, or later, everyone you know that shags will make a pilgrimage to the hardcore dance club
shrines located in the Ocean Drive section of N. Myrtle Beach. These 'mecca of shag' fiefdoms set the
standards. They would include the OD Arcade, the Boulevard Grill, the Spanish Galleon, the Pirates
Cove, and the infamous, notorius three; the OD Pavillion, Ducks at Ocean Drive, and Fat Harold's
Beach Club. They all feature several large hardwood dance floors.
